Héracléion, aussi connue sous le nom de Thonis, est une ancienne cité de l’Egypte antique située près de l’actuelle Aboukir.  Elle fut découverte en 2001, conjointement avec Canope, la ville voisine, englouties dans la baie d’Aboukir, lors des fouilles archéologiques sous-marines menées par Frank Goddio président de l’Institut européen d’archéologie sous-marine (IEASM).

L’exposition proposée à l’Institut du monde arabe, dans le 5e arrondissement de Paris, pendant plusieurs mois fin 2015-début 2016, a fasciné des dizaines de milliers de visiteurs. Ils pouvaient y découvrir notamment des objets provenant de la cité antique d’Héracléion, situéee à 40 km d’Alexandrie. Une ville engloutie depuis longtemps à 7 km des côtes actuelles égyptiennes sous 8 mètres d’eau, et retrouvée par les archéologues il y a peu.

Le site est immense, et la zone de fouilles actuelles couvre pas moins de 2 km². Comme elle a été préservée des pillages, les scientifiques s’attendent encore à de nombreuses découvertes, même si leur tableau de pêche s’avère déjà impressionnant : quelque 15 000 pièces ont été récupérées sur place, allant du simple morceau de céramique à la stèle colossale en granit rose de 6,10 m de haut, 3,10 m de large et pesant 15 tonnes.

Selon les historiens, Héracléion a été abandonnée à la suite d’un tremblement de terre qui a déclenché un raz-de-marée il y a environ 1200 ans. Jusqu’alors, c’était une riche et puissante métropole, centre commercial aussi bien que religieux, bénéficiant d’une position stratégique sur la Méditerranée : c’est par son port que devaient transiter les bateaux grecs pour livrer ou acquérir leurs marchandises au pays des pharaons.

Son déclin avait cependant déjà commencé bien longtemps avant, lors du règne d’Alexandre le Grand, au IV^e siècle avant notre ère. Le conquérant avait en effet ordonné que le commerce soit transféré dans la ville voisine créée par lui et portant son nom, Alexandrie.
